Sometimes to entertain ourselves, my companions and I used to speak Slovene with an exaggerated Utahn accent (what can I say, we were missionaries, entertainment was hard to come by). Sadly, our exaggerated accents probably didn't sound much different than the accents native Slovenians heard from us.
I can say this confidently because today's strip is nearly word for word based on an experience I had during the first couple of weeks in Slovenia.

I had a companion from North Carolina who spoke Korean with a great southern drawl. It was hilarious!
ReplyDeleteOn the flip side of this, I love to hear missionaries give homecoming reports with accents they have picked up from the locations they served.
ReplyDeleteI got the "I don't speak Russian" line a few times. Apparently Slovene spoken with a Utahn accent = Russian?
