Next week I'm moving on from this long, serialized story of Elder Van Dyke and his companion losing a promising investigator. Sadly, this was the kind of thing that happened to me with quite some regularity on my mission. I don't know if the storyline works in a humor strip, but it definitely works in a missionary memoir.

Coach Speak 2
Next week I'm moving on from this long, serialized story of Elder Van Dyke and his companion losing a promising investigator. Sadly, this was the kind of thing that happened to me with quite some regularity on my mission. I don't know if the storyline works in a humor strip, but it definitely works in a missionary memoir.

I suppose even missionaries are tempted to use unrepeatable coachspeak every now and again--I know I was.
ReplyDeleteI recently heard a talk by Pres. Monson where he was telling his favorite stories about each of the prophets he served under. One prophet, I can't recall which one, was patiently listening to a father lecture him about why his son shouldn't go on the mission the prophet called him to. When the father left, Pres. Monson said to the prophet, "you were much more patient than I would have been" to which the prophet replied, "I had a few choice words I learned from my time in the service that I was tempted to use but I think I would have shocked everyone." So even prophets are tempted to use unrepeatable coachspeak.
ReplyDeleteGreat story, Jena. I saw a broadcast of that talk, too. It was fun to hear all those personal stories about the prophets.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I watched it with Marc while I was in labor at the hospital 2 weeks ago. That's probably why I can't remember which prophet he was speaking about. Do you remember Arie? I know it was an early one because there's no way the prophet today would have a personal discussion with a father about his son's mission call.
ReplyDeleteSadly, Jena, I watched that particular CES fireside in the wee hours of the night while I was up with my infant, so my memory of the particulars is not so great either.
