I don't know how common this was in other missions, but in my mission our Mission President encouraged us to participate in one cultural event a month. The mission home was located in Vienna, Austria so the mission was smack dab in the middle of the arts. Even us missionaries in Slovenia got into the act: I probable saw more ballet on my mission that I have the rest of my life combined.
I appreciate the efforts of my Mission President in trying to give back something to his missionaries. I know I got something out of culture night (namely this and the strips for the following two weeks).
Professional hockey was a favorite "Culture Night" event among missionaries in my mission in Russia. We also went to the circus a couple of times. We even saw a couple of operas (as if Russian wasn't hard enough to understand as a new missionary.
ReplyDeleteI went to a couple of hockey games on my mission too. We stuck out like a sore thumb seeing as how the missionaries were the only people in the arena without a cigarette in our mouths (that includes the hockey players on the bench).
DeleteWe also went to a BYU basketball exhibition game. Mark Durrant was really cool (he visited with the missionaries after a tough loss), but Randy Reed got into a fight. All in all, it wasn't the best missionary tool.
We were in a parade for Buddha's birthday, but it was more by accident...and I don't think the mission president would've approved.
ReplyDeleteIf you haven't already, you really should use this for a gag.
