I usually avoid topical subjects on this blog so my gags have a timeless quality,* but the demise of Twinkies, Ding Dongs, and other bad-for-you pastries was a subject too sweet to pass up. Sadly, my food storage is also lacking in Hostess yummies, instead it's full of useless stuff like dry milk and red wheat.
*Although, that doesn't always work so well.

Thanksgiving in the Field
On my mission there were exactly two processed food items that originated from the United States. One of them was an Uncle Ben's jar of sauce that you could heat up, add chicken, and serve it with rice for a lovely entree.* We missionaries were too lazy to follow all those steps so we would prepare it by dumping the contents cold into a pot of cooked rice and stirring it up. This was the feast I enjoyed on my first Thanksgiving as a missionary. It was the most depressing day of my mission.**
(You can find another missionary strip at deseretnews.com.)
*The other food item was the now sadly discontinued Keebler's Elfkins cookie. If you remember, these were miniature EL Fudges only for some reason they tasted much better than an EL fudge chopped up into little pieces (believe me, I've tried).
**Don't worry, my first Thanksgiving wouldn't be the most depressing day of my mission for long. It was soon replaced with my first Christmas in the field where we repeated our Thanksgiving feast and my family was unable to phone me.

Into the Lion's Den
For missionaries like me who are strongly allergic to cats, visiting a cat lady can be every bit as daunting as Daniel's trip to the lion's den.

Purpose of Life
I don't have anything to say about this one--which is probably exactly the response the missionaries should have.

Election Night Recap
So Mitt Romney won't be President after all. I've read all sorts of explanations as to why he lost and Barack Obama won and the one that stood out to me was that Romney's loose association with the Tea Party cost him the Election.
I can buy that. I mean why wouldn't a political movement named after a hot drink prohibited in the Word of Wisdom be problematic to the Mormon candidate?

Civic Duty
I've pretty much steered clear of Presidential politics on this blog these past months despite the Mormon elephant in the room.* This is mostly because I haven't been able to come up with anything clever to say.**
I still don't have anything clever to say, but I do want to express my gratitude over the fact that in this election where all number of nasty things were said about each candidate, by in large, it never stooped to an attack on the candidates' religion. If anything, the President has ceded that Mitt Romney's faith is a good thing--while attacking everything else about him.
Seeing the Church dragged through the mud was my greatest fear this election so whatever tomorrow's outcome, I'm at least grateful that it never came to that.
(Here's today's non-political strip over at deseretnews.com.)
*See what I did there?
**I know, I know, this hasn't stopped me before.
