2015 Summer Movie Preview

Tomorrow Avengers: Age of Ultron premières marking the beginning of a very promising summer movie season.* But it’s not the movies I want to see that I want to write about today, instead it’s a movie series I doubt I’ll ever watch.

What is the deal with the Fast and the Furious?

In case you haven’t heard, the seventh Fast and Furious movie, which came out last month, has already made over $1 billion worldwide! It’s now the fifth largest grossing movie of all time! And it’s about a bunch of meatheads who drive cars fast!**

What is wrong with moviegoers? This movie has made more than Raiders of the Lost Ark, more than The Empire Strikes Back, more than The Singles Ward. Again it’s about a bunch of meatheads who drive cars fast!

The thing is, I now wonder if I should watch it. Is it worth my time? And do I have to watch the first six (!) movies in the series before I watch number seven? Surely, some of my readers have seen this movie. I’d love your feedback.

*Here’s the list of movies I’m excited to see this summer (in no particular order): Avengers, Jurassic World, Tommorowland, Inside Out, Ant-Man, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and Fantastic Four.

**I imagine every line of dialog in the Fast and Furious movies ends in an explanation point!

Bike Troubles

So there was this little stretch of woods nearby my third area as a missionary. My companion and I would ride our bikes through those woods as a shortcut to get to a certain area of the city where we could do some work. One day, early on in my companionship, I told my companion how much I enjoyed mountain biking back home and generally painted a picture of this totally extreme risk-taker.

That very day, I proceeded to crash my bike going through those woods on a very easy little turn. On one hand, I was on a 1970s ten-speed; but on the other hand, it was really embarrassing. The moral of the story: don't be a braggart.

Opening Exercises

I love the idea of this 1980s aerobics instructor patiently waiting 30 years for a chance to run opening exercises. I just want to know if she's ever asked back.

Lawyer Prayer

In fairness to lawyers, I've heard a bunch of them pray and they've never sounded like this. Here's the thing about this gag: clearly the guy offering the prayer is trying to ensure that the blessings he's asked for will still be available even after he's failed to live up to his side of the agreement. But the very nature of Christ's grace already allows for that. In fact, no amount of legalese could craft a contract more generous than the one we already got.

How's that for a lawyer joke!

Sharing Through Social Media

I feel for the poor young women instructors in today's comic. If they are anything like this old guy (pointing to self), they don't know half of the social media sites those kids do.

Speaking kids and their social media, let me draw your attention to the young woman on the right with the big hair. That's my attempt to illustrate Scott Hales' Enid, a brilliant addition to Mormon webcomics. While I stumbled upon Scott's work only a little while ago, he's been posting regularly for over a year now. By all means check his stuff out, I love it.
