Actually, the best way to see inside an envelope is to pour oil on it, it's something to do with the light not scattering as much. so that would be one way to do it... but then it would be wet...

I'll have to remember that the next time I want to read through an envelope. It would have done poor Elder Van Dyke to know that too.
